OPUS for Mac OSX (Intel)?

Post by poduska » Wed Mar 03, 2010 5:05 pm

Is there any feedback from users who've tried to install the Linux port for OPUS on Mac OSX?

Thanks!

First, sorry for the delayed reply!

Unfortunately, somehow launching the existing Linux package won't work. Mac OS X is an entirely different architecture. Of course it's a (UNIX- / POSIX-based) BSD derivative (which certainly helps), but pretty much the entire userspace stack is quite different.

While - given the existing wxWidgets-based Linux port - a Mac port has become MUCH more feasible (via existing wxWidgets Mac support), this would still be an effort which is quite a bit more significant (setting up a Mac development environment and build, adding/fixing missing/different wx behaviour here and there and everywhere, creating an entirely different Mac .dmg installer package) than the pretty simple step of extending support to another x86 Linux distribution.

Thus I'm afraid given an Intel-based Mac installation, booting a Linux distribution (also in a virtual machine), or booting Windows, by dual-booting (Bootcamp) or a virtual machine (Parallels) Windows installation currently are the only options. It might be worthwhile to do some OPUS Windows trial using Wine (or much preferrably, CodeWeavers CrossOver Office), but since I have spent a lot less time with it in recent years, I'm unable to forecast its behaviour in running OPUS.

Thank you again, your request has certainly been taken into account - in case of a growing number of requests creation of an OS X port will be expedited.

In case of further questions, never hesitate to ask!

Yours sincerely
